This bracelet pairs gorgeous old silver with very well worn antique trade beads.
The silver comes from many places: eye catcher is the Afghan silver bead with the blue band. This blue is lapis lazuli- since centuries Afghanistan is home of the best lapis in the world. The silver has oxidized, so there is another blue accent on this bead, a very light turquoise. An uncommon bead.
The other focal bead is an old bead from Turkmenistan. I totally love this one, with its star shape. Near the clasp is an antique Yemeni bead from the famous silversmiths of Sana'a. Then there is a Tuareg bead and lastly an amulet from Ethiopia, once part of a bridal necklace, probably containing a tiny scroll with a sacred text. All of these beads are collectible.
The Afghan silver bead goes nicely with a very special blue glass bead that was made in the 1800's in Germany. It is a mishap. It should have been three separate beads, but the process of separating failed, so now it is a triplet. Making beads like these, wound directly in the furnace, required a great deal of skill and experience. And the output was huge: 5000 beads a day! So it should not surprise that sometimes it went wrong. I actually like beads like these, more than the perfect ones. The bead has a good patina.
I added three of its sisters, nicely rounded and properly separated, two blue beads and one clear bead. They sit next to awesome Hebron beads. These top too date back to the 1800's, or even earlier. They were made by the descendants of glass makers that fled for the crusaders, and settled in Hebron, now making glass with salts of the Dead Sea, and passing over their knowledge from father to son. Great raw wound beads, that were squared somewhere in their life, by owners who liked them better that way. These have a very long history, and it shows.
A very lovely organic bracelet with a superb choice of trade beads, all of them collectible (not in the least the mishap).
SIZE: it measures approx. 6.1 inches (15.5 cm) and will sit snugly on a medium sized wrist. See pictures for dimensions. If you need more length, I can add more silver rings at a small extra cost.
