Antique American Cut top Glass Bowl with Hobstars, Fans, and Sawtooth Edge - Possible American Brilliant Period Cut Glass (1876 to 1916)
American Brilliant Period (ABP) cut glass is fine quality, hand-cut crystal produced between 1880 and 1925. It's exceptional “brilliance” results from the high lead content of the glass, up to 50% versus 24% for modern crystal, which gives it a high refractive index. ABP pieces behave like prisms scattering light into the different colors of the rainbow. Artisans pressed “blank” or uncut pieces of glass against a series of spinning wheels to cut the desired pattern into the surface of the glass and when finished, polished the design restoring it's original clarity and sparkle. Early in the ABP, the patterns were 100% hand cut however after 1910, many companies reduced production costs by pressing part of the design into the blank and cutting the remainder.
ABP cut glass can be divided into two general classes of designs. Prior to 1910, most pieces were cut in geometric patterns known as “rich cut glass” consisting of combinations of hobstars, pinwheels, diamonds, fans, and other geometric patterns. After 1910, many companies began cutting and engraving non-geometric designs such as flowers, fruit, birds, and other natural scenes. Some old pieces have been reported to fluoresce pink, purple or orange. Many old pieces were not acid-signed and instead had paper labels attached indicating the manufacturer or retailer and most old pieces have wear marks ie scratches, abrasions, or small top nicks on the bottom and on the inside face.
This American Cut Glass Bowl with Hobstars, Fans, Clusters, Cross Hatching, and Sawtooth Edge is possibly American Brilliant Period Cut Glass because the bowl meets all the characteristics of ABP as defined by the American Cut Glass Association. This unsigned cut glass bowl is in good condition with minor wear on the sawtooth edges and base due to use. The bowl weighs 3 pounds 4 ounces and measures 3.25" tall with a 7.5" diameter opening and 3.5" diameter base. This gorgeous American Cut Glass bowl would make an elegant addition to any crystal collection!
