Originally published in 1891 in Poland, this is the first American edition of Sienkiewicz's analytical novel, written in the form of a fictitious diary. Henry Sienkiewicz (1846-1916) was to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1905 for ''his outstanding merits as an epic writer.
