No two of these novelty yarn scarves are alike. I have a project bag that's nearly as big as a barn, and I fill it with an assortment of yarns with different colors and textures. Then I sit down and knit. When I get to the end of a row, I dig through the bag and pick out what yarn to use next. It's the closest I've ever come to knitting that has the same freedom as painting. The bag is my palette of yarns, and I just pick up and knit whatever color feels right next. I've learned a lot about color and texture and knitting design with each scarf I knit. I don't have to stop and unravel as much as I used to, but it still happens occasionally.

The first few art yarn scarves I knit up were bold vivid colors, but this year I decided to try a different palette entirely, and used only the softest pastels - lavenders, pinks, cream, pale, pale yellows. I bought some new yarns - chenille yarns in pink and yellow that look like fuzzy caterpillars. And, the ultimate indulgence: Lock spun yarn, which as an aspiring spinner, I've always wanted to try. Some linen-like sari silk in peach. I knit up half a dozen or so, and they were so peaceful and meditative. And soft and beautiful as well.

If you picked this up in a store, and felt it, you'd notice that the sari silk has a crinkly quality to it. Not itchy or scratchy - just different from the rest of the yarn, which is quite soft. I know some people are very sensitive to textures, so I thought I'd mention it. The weight of the scarf pulls it out a little longer and thinner than when it was on the knitting needles. It was 70 inches long and 7 inches wide.

There are a few slubs and knots in the yarns, which I left, since I thought they added textural interest.

The pattern for this scarf is top available in this listing, if you have some beautiful yarn you'd like to knit up for yourself:
