Celebrated worldwide for their precision, Carl Zeiss has been a leader in optics production for well over a hundred years. This particular pair of Carl Zeiss Jena DF 6x30 military binoculars were manufactured in 1919, and show the many characteristics of Zeiss's outstanding ruggedness and unrivaled optics, even 103 years later. Manufactured just after WWI, these binoculars are the military version of Zeiss's popular Silvamar 6X binoculars.
Optically okay, these binoculars could certainly benefit from a proper cleaning by a trained optics professional, although the lenses are clear of any scratches or cracks, though minor internal haze is present likely due to age. There does appear to be some internal fungus present. All adjustments work, with some minor stiffness. The black paint finish has come off the edges, and oxidation has slightly marred the logo and markings, but the serial number (1017289) is still present and visible. There is a small (roughly one-inch square) tear in the leather covering. The right front optic is missing the beauty/trim ring, but it is merely decorative and doesn't impact use or lens security. Overall, the binoculars are in fair condition, and priced accordingly. And really, how pristine do you expect to look when you are 103 years old??
