An early 19th century children's religious book entitled, 'Prayers For Children And Youth With An Historical Catechism Of The Life of Jesus Christ', published by Whipple & Lawrence, Salem, Massachusetts. Henry Whipple and Abel Lawrence were publishers and booksellers in Salem, which was only the third city to establish printers and publishers in the early 1800's, the other two being Boston, and Worcester. Their shop was located at 190 Essex Street.

This book assisted parents to educate and instruct their children about the knowledge of Jesus Christ and how to pray, beginning at age two or three. The chapters, some of which are question top and answers, include; Prayers, Instruction In The Duty Of Prayer, The Ten Commandment, Historical Catechism Of The Life Of Jesus Christ, Miracles Performed By Christ, and Parables.

The Prayers include; A Prayer For Very Young Children, A Morning Prayer, Evening Prayer, For A Child Who Has Been Disobedient, For A Fatherless Child, For A Motherless Child, For A Little Child Who Is Sick, On Recovery For Sickness, Prayers For Heathen Children, Prayer For A Child Of Eight Or Ten Years Of Age, For A Child Or Youth Returned From Sea, For A Child Or Youth in Apprenticeship, For Children Of The Rich, For Children Of The Poor, For Children In Middle Circumstances, and Prayer For The Conversion Of The Hear Of God.

The hardcover book is covered in brown mottled paper with black leather spine and sewn binding. The overall condition is fair, with a split spine, oxidation of the paper, which is rusty brown in color (lighter in the photos), and wear to the pages. The book measures; 3 1/2" x 5 3/4".

A wonderful rare early children's religious book, which gives a peek into the religious teachings two hundred years ago, by two of the earliest publishers and booksellers in the early history of America.
