History of Lao Jewelry
The heartland of Laos in Southeast Asia has always been on the edges of civilization and viewed as an exotic culture by early Western travelers and explorers. The Dok Phikoun flower is indigenous to the region and very special to the Lao Buddhists and its people. In the beginning of Lao history, the Dok Phikoun motif was used in jewelry pieces initially reserved only for the Lao Royal Family. It is believed to bring the wearer good luck, good health and protection. The complexity and intricacy to make this special handcrafted design has slowly made this art form fade from the cultures existence. Our artisan family strives to keep this ancient art form alive by teaching younger Lao artisans and families their history and handmade craft. Our Dok Phikoun jewelry are top the same ones worn in ancient traditional ceremonies, usually in gold or white silver. Our hopes are that this art form will one day spread throughout the world to be enjoyed and worn by many. We take great pride in everything we do, from the very start of our production, to the moment it leaves our hands onto yours. Every handcraft piece embodies the pinnacle of Lao history and handmade work.
Creation Process from our Lao Jewelry Artisans
A very strenuous, intense labor of love art form, each unique jewelry piece is handcrafted, hand cut and handwoven by our skilled Artists. One piece of jewelry can take up to several weeks to make. The Dok Phikoun Flower is the ancient centerpiece of our jewelry. To create this flower, we hand run our silver through a flattening tool until it becomes a delicate fine silver wire; we place the wire through a spindle to create the spiral to make the flower. This step takes precise skilled handwork. The spiral has to be uniformly cut by hand and adjoined with tiny silver beads at extreme high heat to create the centerpiece to our signature Dok Phikoun. A single flower is created through this process, and many more is delicately made to be soldered to a base of thicker strands of silver woven together like fabric. One jewelry piece can contain hundreds of our flower motif. Every handcrafted piece of jewelry has that level of attention to detail. Each piece has a story and is truly a timeless handcrafted tradition that our family is proud to preserve.
