Product code: Top Federal Schenkl Artillery Fuse & Fragment - Wilderness Battlefield

This type percussion fuse was used in the Federal Schenkl artillery shell. Stamped on the brass fuse is “J.P. SCHENKL OCT. 16, 1861”. This type shell was for use with the 3” Parrott or the 3” Ordnance Rifle. The Model 1861 3” Ordnance Rifle was copied by Confederate Armories. The design of this rifle, soon a favorite with artillerists in both armies, is recognized by the complete absence of any discontinuities in the surface of the gun. The fuse and fragment were excavated from the Wilderness Battlefield near Fredericksburg, Virginia.

The Wilderness, near Fredericksburg, Virginia, was the first battle in 1864 between General Grant's “Army of the Potomac” and General Lee's “Army of Northern Virginia”. It was the beginning of what would be called Grant's “Overland Campaign” to take the Confederate capitol at Richmond.

The fuse measures 2 5/8”. The iron fragment has been treated and sealed. The stand is included. The last picture illustrates what the shell looked like.
