*** Who was Aristotle?

Aristotle (Greek: Αριστοτέλης, 384-322 B.C.) was a Greek philosopher and polymath during the classical period in Ancient Greece. He was born in the city of Stagira in the Greek state of Macedonia. The volume, extent and depth of his work is humbling. He was the founder of the Lyceum, the Peripatetic school of philosophy, and the Aristotelian tradition. Aristotle's influence on western culture and science has been enormous. His teacher was Plato and his writings cover many subjects including government biology, physics, economics, metaphysics, logic, politics, ethics, aesthetics, poetry, theatre, music, rhetoric and psychology. As a result, his philosophy has exerted a unique influence on almost every form of knowledge in the West and it continues to be a subject of contemporary philosophical discussion.

*** Aristotle quotes

“Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom.”
“It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.”
“What is a friend? A single soul dwelling in two bodies.”
“Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.”
“No great mind has ever existed without a touch of madness.”
“Happiness depends upon ourselves.”
“Anybody can become angry — that is easy, but to be angry with the right person and to the right degree and at the right time and for the right purpose, and in the right way — that is not within everybody's power and is not easy.”
“Excellence is never an accident. It is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, and intelligent execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives - choice, not chance, determines your destiny.”
“Wishing to be friends is quick work, but friendship is a slow ripening fruit.”
“Happiness is the meaning and the purpose of life, the whole aim and end of human existence.”
“A friend to all is a friend to none.”
“Patience is bitter, but its fruit is sweet.”
“Those who educate children well are more to be honored than they who produce them; for these only gave them life, those the art of living well.”

*** What Aristotle said about love?

Aristotle believed that self-love is a prerequisite to loving others. He is clear in Nicomachean Ethics that self-love is an entirely proper emotion provided it is expressed in the love of virtue. As long as you love yourself, not just for the sake of loving yourself but for the benefit of others.
