Early top hand wrought brass and iron tongs with decorative finial. Brass handle is seamed and peened on in the 18th and early 19th century method. This pair is typical of what was being used in better homes in New Hampshire and the surrounding states during and just after the American revolution.
Handle pattern features urn, drum, bobbin and beehive shapes. Arms are sleeved in brass in the better style of their times.
Perfect for using today just as they were more than two hundred years ago. Use inside at the fireplace or outside for cookouts, beach gatherings or just as decorative accents. With some looking, it is possible to assemble a set with poker, shovel and andirons, and possibly a fender with similar tops though as time passes and the old farms are sold off, these items are getting more and more scarce as well as expensive to purchase from specialist dealers.
This style is often called Chippendale but were made into the early Federal era of the USA (1788-1800) and perhaps a decade later.

Lightly buffed to restore the glow of the brass but not to garishness. Full wafer tips. Iron is straight and clean with texture but no pitting from rust. Handle is removable and screws tight 1/4 turn from original, this could be fixed with a very thin brass wafer filed to match the shape.
