The Stangl Pottery Company began as Hill Pottery in 1814, producing pipes, jars, and crocks from red clay. When Fulper acquired Hill Pottery decades later, in addition to low-kiln earthenware, he added stoneware.

Martin Stangl was a ceramic engineer hired to develop new shapes and glazes, he soon became vice-president of Fulper's. in 1929 fire destroyed Fulpers factory, Stangl bought it, and renamed it Stangl Pottery. Six years later, he moved his factory to Trenton N.J.
They manufactured a lot of popular dinnerware, and decorative pieces, but today are best known for their birds.

Stangl's Birds of America series was produced from 1940 1972. Although they were mass produced figures they were all hand painted, mostly by local women. Many of these are signed by the painter top with their initials on the back or bottom.

This is the Stangl Pottery Birds Figuring # 3490D (all 2 bird figures have a D in the part number) however it is marked simply as 3490. It is a large figure for Stangl, It stands 9 1/4 inches tall. it is 5 1/2 inches long and 4 3/4 wide. It features 2 Redstart birds, one with red and one with yellow. The figure is in great shape with no chips or scratches.
