Antique 1893 Household Book, Home Remedies For Man and Beast, Homeopathic Beauty, top Cleaning Manners Horses, A Complete Cookbook, Cheerfulness
This Victorian household management book published in 1893 really has it all - “a complete cookbook”, medical dictionary, home remedies - including remedies for unlikely incidents in our time like treating coal gas suffocation, how to treat a drowning person, child care, ink making, ointment making, medicinal herbs, disposition and care of horses, hair care and bathing, how to pickle eggs, how to fold napkins, manners, cheerfulness and well being, keeping a beautiful house, canning fruit….comprehensive books like this were very popular in the 1800's when rural people had limited access to books.
The book was written by Prof. B. Jefferis and Mrs. “Grandma” Nichols wrote the cookbook, 8th edition, packed with wonderful illustrations - the artwork alone makes this book a treasure. Historically very interesting, a broad look at domestic and country life in the late 1800's. 403 pp including an index at the top back. Overall condition is very good for a book this age, but there are a few things to note: pencil name in the front with the year 1893, some discolouration from water damage along the bottoms of about half the pages (visible in photos), faded lettering on spine and cover. Still holding together nicely. Measures 7.25”x5”.
