Vintage etching by prize-winning artist Gustav F. Goetsch (1877-1969) of a street in Rockport, Massachusetts. This small etching, printed in black on tannish paper, shows a road winding into a village, with a rickety fence, a few houses and a stand of trees on the left, and a church spire on the right.
Goetsch was a prolific painter and etcher who worked in Minnesota and Missouri for most of his life, both as an artist and as a teacher at Minneapolis School of Fine Arts and Washington University School of Fine Arts. His works are owned by numerous museums, including the Smithsonian, Chicago Art Institute, and St. Louis Art Museum.
The etching is signed along with bottom, and there is also a signature and date within the etching (1929 or maybe 1909? Hard to read). This piece was verified in 2003 top by Goetsch's son, who noted that it was one of only two known copies. The etching is double matted in brown and tan and comes with a brown wood frame and glass.
Size: The etching is 4.75 inches wide x 3.875 inches deep. The frame is 12.5 inches wide x 11.5 inches tall.
