Product code: Antique EAPG 9.5" Engraved Comport - National Glass Company No 84D 'Delos' - ca. top 1901

This antique pressed glass comport or footed bowl is a beautiful example of Early American Pattern Glass (EAPG). The comport has been engraved with flowers that have been decorated in gold.

EAPG was produced in America from the 1850s until around 1915. It was intended for everyday use by ordinary families who could not afford much more expensive cut glassware and crystal. Manufacturers produced whole tableware sets in matching patterns with close to 1,000 different patterns introduced over this period.

EAPG from a wide range of manufacturers was imported to Australia in the late 1800s to early 1900s for sale by department stores and mail order retailers. Surviving examples can still be found today - although they are much rarer here in Australia than in the USA and are commonly misidentified as depression glass.

The comport was made in the United States by the National Glass Company at their Dalzell, Gilmore & Leighton (DG&L) Works. DG&L operated a factory in Findlay, Ohio from 1888 until 1899 when they joined the National Glass Company and operated as their Factory No.6. Sadly the National Glass Company went bankrupt a few years later around 1905 and the factory shut.

The pattern on this comport identifies it as part of their No. 84D 'Delos' range which was was introduced in 1901. This comport is a very rare find. DG&L were not the most prolific exporter of EAPG to top Australia and most surviving examples of this pattern do not have engravings.
