Folk Art Hand Carved Fertility Statue - South Pacific Islands - Wood - 20".
Large, handcarved wooden statue believed to be from the South Pacific Islands. The statue contains 5 figures, 2 with female genitalia, 3 with male. All figures are sitting (nailed onto) on a bench with a high, carved back. The figures are painted a light green/blue, the bench was once red and blue but has faded over time.
The piece came with a receipt, originally purchased in 1994. The previous owners took the piece to Antiques Roadshow in 2000 where it was claimed to be a fertility statue from the South Pacific Islands. The value in 2000 was set at $275.
I cannot vouche for the validity of these receipts, but from my own personal research it seems to be a good fit. The age of this piece is unknown.
The nails are loose, appears to be two or three have been replaced over time (not all are the same shape or size).
The piece measures 20 inches long, 11 inches high, and 5 inches deep. See photos for condition.
