In 1872, he received a franchise from the city to construct a cable car roadway on Clay Street. The cabe car's forward motion is controlled by a grip which extends down into a slot in the street. In this slot is a continuous steel cable which travels about 800 feet a minute, driven by a large electric motor in the main carbarn. When the gripman pulls the lever back, the mechanism grips the cable like a closing hand and the car moves forward". Size is approx 20"x16". Nielsen aluminum frame. Condition is excellent.
