Product code: Vintage 1950’s Modern 6” TOSCANA top Vase with Multicolor Abstract Design by Cilli WORSDORFER for JASBA (582/15)

This is a classic midcentury 6” fish-mouth vase with a sgraffito abstract design highlighted in glossy yellow and maroon glazes on a matte gray surface. This is the TOSCANA line designed by CILLI WORSDORFER for JASBA circa 1959. Marked under base in raised lettering “GERMANY/582/16”. Also has remnants of JASBA silver foil label.

No chips, cracks, flakes, repairs or mineral deposits. Looks like this was used as just a decoration for the past 50+ years. A great addition to your mid-century JASBA KERAMIK or German pottery collection or just a great accent piece in your MCM home.

JASBA KERAMIKFABRIKEN was founded in 1926 by JAKOB SCHWADERLAPP (who also founded CERAMANO) in Ransbach-Baumbach, near Koblenz in Western Germany. By the mid-1950's JASBA had grown to be the largest ceramics enterprise in the Westerwald, with a volume of domestic and foreign sales in the seven-digit range. The large range of ornamental ceramics produced continued to expand, however the program was limited to conventional forms and décors, until the introduction of modern forms began in 1955. In that top year, the décor JASPATINA was introduced, and a year later CORTINA was introduced in several color variants, which proved to be very successful and remained in the production until the early 1960s.

At the beginning of 1957, the ceramicist and decor designer CILLI WÖRSDÖRFER joined JASBA following a stint at RUSCHA KERAMIK. Her colorful, abstract surface decorations struck a special note with her decors, TUSCANA (or TUSCANY) and VERONA, followed by the decors GHANA and KARO, all of which are still much sought-after by collectors of JASBA's 1950s era shapes and décors. CILLI WÖRSDÖRFER was the key designer at JASBA in the 1950's, known for modern designs but dull and unexciting glazes.

In 1960 CHRISTIANE REUTER took over from CILLI WÖRSDÖRFER and in 1962 JASBA started the BUNTE WELT DER KERAMIK (COLORFUL WORLD OF CERAMICS) line with shiny glazes and bright colors. JASBA did not create many FAT LAVA or other textured glazes, instead experimenting with shapes and molded patterns creating some amazing designs with bold blazes and modern shapes. By ten years later, the production of decorative ceramics began to decline and by 1981 production had shifted entirely to ceramic tiles. JASBA MOZAIK is still in business today.

JASBA KERAMIK's immense repertoire was characterized by a great diversity. In 1958 alone, 40 different types of vases were offered in more than 80 sizes and almost 30 different decor variants. In 1959, in a bid to reach a higher-end market, Schwaderlapp founded JASBA's well-heeled sister company, CERAMANO KUNSTKERAMIK W.J. SCHWADERLAPP KG. CERAMANO would become a powerhouse in its own right with the production of many higher-end experimental forms and glazes intended to closely resemble the work of individual studio potters, and to be sold in better department stores and specialty shops throughout Europe.

THANKS FOR LOOKING.
