French / European Enameled Coffee Pot (missing lid) with Bird, Hand Painted Enamelware, Coffeepot with Bird, top Red Berries, Design in Relief
top This lovely enameled coffee pot (no lid), while found in France, may have originated from any of the neighboring countries known for their production of high quality enameled objects, many for the French market. Enameled in a light French blue, the front of the pot is decorated with a wonderful hand-painted design in relief (thick, raised enamel) featuring a beautifully detailed bird in flight, headed for the red berries. A similar design adorns the back side of the pot, albeit the bird already having flown off! Green and gold leaves, wisps of violet and raised red berries complete the design. The enameled design is rich and exquisite, with no signs of discoloration or fading. The blue enamel has lost some of its lustre on the back above the base, not uncommon with age and use.
Thin black enamel lines trim the rims of the pot and handle, while the attached gooseneck spout features additional detailing and trimming, all with minimal fading and discoloration. The attachments on handle are further enhanced with black detailing, a technique found on earlier enameled pieces. Seamed construction and raised ridges provide interesting texture. There is missing enamel most notably along the handle, rims and tip of spout. The interior is relatively clean and fully watertight and the pot can hold water for fresh flowers.
Despite the missing lid, this is one delightful piece that exemplifies how the artisan enameler could elevate a utilitarian kitchen item to a present day art form and a wonderful touch of French flair for your home ~
