The box is in very nice condition, given the fact it is 100+ years old. It displays beautifully. It is constructed of wood with all sides covered with an ivory color celluloid. The box is attached to a pedestal base with the sides covered in a raised embossed celluloid and the bottom covered in black leather. The celluloid is embossed around the base with scrolls and leaves. The top and front of the box is also adorned with the same scroll and leaves along the edges, but they are hand colored with a light blue and pink and accented with aged/darkened gold paint.

The top of the lid of the box is embossed and hand colored with a basket of flowers surrounded by an oval frame. The front of the box has a pansy embellished frame design with a snowy church scene in the center. The color of the celluloid on the front is more yellow than the rest of the box.

The hinges and front latch are in fine working order. They are brass and appear to have had gilding on them at one time as there is a faint appearance of it left in the recessed areas. When the latch is opened, the lid lifts up and the front folds down.

The inside of the box is lined with a draped aqua blue silk in the body and the lid is lined with an aqua blue, pink and golden floral pattern velvet with a beveled mirror attached in the center. There is twisted white cord around the mirror and across the inside of the box below the hinge area.

Underneath the silk there are raised areas for holding grooming tools. On the inside of the back of the box there is an area for a hand mirror with swivel latch to hold it in place. On the bottom of the box there is a support structure to hold a hairbrush handle. On the inside of the front of the box there is another raised support structure with a circle and oval in front of it. I haven't been able to figure out what that space would hold.

FLAWS:
Overall the surface of the case has very few minor scuffs on the outside and shows signs of wear appropriate with age. There are areas where the celluloid has chipped off on the sides of the lid in the corners. Both sides are shown as a composite in the last photo . The celluloid is lifting along the edges of the back and front, with a small chip along one edge on the back and a small chip missing off the edge of the front. There is some missing celluloid on both of the front corners of the base with tiny chips off the corners in the back.

The silk lining does show some wear in the support structure areas, especially on the inside of the flip down front wall. Both of the support structures have a loose upright piece. The mirror shows signs of oxidation with tiny brown spots on the back of it showing through. The leather on the bottom has edge wear and scuffs to the surface. I'm happy to send a picture of the bottom and more details of the flaws upon request. There are so many surfaces on this box that I chose to include more of the prettier details.
