Product code: Antique top Splint Basket with Stamped Decoration, Native American, New England
This is an early splint basket with stamped decoration and dyed weavers, most likely Native American made for the tourist trade. Natural green dye is on the thick center weaver, plus every other small weaver, but it has faded a great deal. The two large outside weavers in the center are brown, but this may have originally been red that has faded to brown. The black stamped designs are still quite bright. The basket is quite sound with only a small chip on one splint, and a small stain, both on the side where I am holding it up with my hand. The basket has a sepia ink signature on the bottom of a previous top owner, Susan Walling. It measures at the bottom 6 1/2" by 3 3/4 " by 3 1/4" high. At the top it measure 7 1/8" by 4 7/8".
