Their manufacture was made possible by the invention of a pin-making machine around 1832. As fashion changed from stringed bonnets to stringless hats the low-cost machine-made pins became a necessity. The golden years of the hatpin, 1890 to 1925, were captured in the rich styles of Art Nouveau, the Aesthetic Movement, Arts & Crafts, and Art Deco."
