It had been a very long day of photography and it was all coming to a climax now. Sunset was fast approaching and I was out of position. I knew where I wanted to be but getting there was another story. I was at Assateague National Seashore but I was out on the drive still and the sun was getting ready to set. I hurried as much as I could but there were wild horses causing traffic jams everywhere. Finally I reached my destination and hopped out of the car to setup my gear. What looked like it might be a dynamite sunset was quickly fizzling. So I turned my attention away from the west and back towards the east where some clouds were lighting up. I put on my wide angle lens and lined up a shot where the marsh trees were not too dense as to clutter up the image. I knew with the lack of color this was going to be a good candidate for a black and white shot so I really concentrated on the patterns and shapes before me. I really liked the layers of interest from the close of the marsh grass to the distant of the clouds. As the last light was fading I became aware of how cold it was. I threw my tripod over my shoulder and headed back to the car for the long drive ahead of me. I had so little time to shoot, everything was a reaction and gut instinct regarding what looked good through the viewfinder.
