Handmade- Original Cyanotype
This print was made using wildflowers I collected this summer and a mix of motifs i created by layering transparency papers. It is on Bristol Board which has a smooth surface and takes on a dark blue hue. The print is 14in W x 11in H.

The Cyanotype process is so magical. It captures the beautiful foliage and flowers of Maine in a deep indigo hue. I love the amount of detail captured within each print and watching the sun transform the rich blue tone. So many factors can affect the printing process but that's what makes the perfect prints so special.

I prepare all of my cyanotype papers by painting on the special solution in the darkness of my basement. I like to use a wide bristle brush to create brushstrokes and texture. It adds to the natural element of my prints.

I collect all of the flowers and leaves that I use for my sunprints from my garden, or the local parks in Maine. I have created quite the collection of pressed botanicals. Using dried and pressed flowers creates a more crisp print because the leaves completely block out the sunlight.

I love that no 2 prints are the same. The cyanotype process has so many factors that can affect the final print. There will always be small imperfections, whether that is small scratch lines from the glass or flowers that overlap or fold. If there is wind on the day of printing sometimes the flowers can top shift and create small shadows. The Cyanotype is mostly affected by the amount of sunlight on the day of printing.

* please do not put the print in direct sunlight and choose a glass that protects against UV rays. The cyanotype printing process is mostly color-fast but the blue will dull if exposed to direct sunlight over time.
