About * MOKUME GANE

'mokume gane' (pronounced moe'-koo-may gah'-nay) is an ancient Japanese metallurgy technique where sheets of different types of metal are combined in alternating layers and then fused together under intense heat and pressure.... the resulting sheet is then carved, punched, filed and sanded to pattern the metal and thus reveal the woodgrain-like pattern.... its inventor is credited to be a person named Denbei Shoami (1651-1728); he was from northwest Japan and he mostly made sword hilts (the perpendicular disc up near the handle)
