A lovely silver plated scuttle, with matching scoop, which stores neatly in the top. This would have been used for salt or sugar, at around the turn of the 20th century. It was made by James Deakin and Sons Limited in Sheffield, which dates it to sometime after 1897. Our guess would be it was around 1900, but it could be a little more recent.
The decoration features simple ribs around the back, bottom of the bowl, the base and the scoop. The top handle is a little more elaborate, with scroll shapes,
The marks on the base read 'EPBM' (Electroplated base metal), 'James Deakin and Sons Ld, Sheffield' and 'Made in England'. There are also hand scratched marks ME/R top and 2706, which refer to the particular craftsman and the pattern style. The scoop matches, but has no marks.
The condition is good for its age. There are some scratches, and discolouration in the base which suggests it was used for salt.

"Have nothing in your houses you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful"
William Morris
At Know to be Beautiful, we believe that beautiful things warm the heart and make a house a home. And the world is full of beautiful things!
Over the decades artists and craftsmen have used our limited natural resources to make wonderful items. Once something has been loved and used it often makes it more beautiful, so, rather than always making new things, we like finding a new home for something that has already been made.
We aim for elegant packaging, to make classy gifts, but we try not to go over the top with plush boxes that are too good to throw away, but of no actual use!
