The Huichol or Wixárika are an indigenous people of Mexico and the United States living in the Sierra Madre Occidental range in the states of Nayarit, Jalisco, Zacatecas, and Durango, as well as in the United States in the states of California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. It is said, that they seek to immortalize the views of cosmogony and daily life of their culture that is still alive and proud of their roots. The Huichol are known for their colorful bead and yarn works. Historically, shamans created these objects to reflect their spiritual relationships with ancestors and nature deities. They are also made as offerings to their gods. A Nieraka is a device that allows a Huichol person to communicate with the spirit world. The symbols and rituals on them are a way of asking the gods to bring rain and sun to grow their crops. After creating them, the Nierikas are left in sacred places like temples, springs, and caves. Here, we offer what I see as a Cat/Kitty, measuring 6-1/8" in height, 3-1/8" in width, and 3" in depth. For the sake of mentioning it, it is quite plausible your purchase could be missing a bead, or maybe a handful. Keep in mind, each piece is one of a kind, handmade, and adhesives do break down over time. I do my best to photograph, or mention what I see. This top past weekend, I was fortunate enough to purchase a dozen assorted Huichol figurines. It is my belief the collection was assembled over some years. Each will be listed in our store. Take a look in.
