Product code: Rare British-U.S. “Indian Trade” top Pattern Hunter or Trappers Skinning Set c1840-60. 19th Century Buffalo Hunters Knives. Sheffield Knives.

This is a very rare set of 19th Century trappers/hunters skinning or butchery knives dating to around 1840-1860.

The two knives are probably Sheffield made, in the British-U.S. “Indian Trade” pattern. They were often used as exchange currency when trading with the American indigenous peoples from the earliest days of European “settlement”.
They were widely employed throughout the continent both for hunting & during conflicts, especially the so called “Indian Wars”.

This set were heirloom pieces originally owned by a buffalo (or bison) hunter active around 1860-70. I bought them directly from the family.

1. 11.5” curved skinner with a 7” carbon steel blade, rosewood scales with finger grips & steel pins. 105g weight.
In good condition with surface wear.

2. 9” scimitar skinner with a 5” carbon steel blade, beechwood scales & steel pins. 80g weight.
Good, well used condition with a few small blade chips.

3. 12” light weight cleaver with a 6” carbon steel blade & half tang. The oak handle is a more modern replacement, probably early 20th century. 250g weight.
Excellent antique condition with light surface wear.

Stamped Cast Steel, Sheffield with the 3 Crowns mark of William Tyndall & Co. (operating c1800-1870).

Produced in the tens of thousands in various sizes, very few can now be found in this superb, original condition.
They have been carefully cleaned of surface rust & dirt but not over restored. They would hone up like razors with a little work.

Museum quality & probably a little old for kitchen use, but a must have set for antique knife, hunting, Native American & U.S. history collectors.

Please have a good look at all top the photos & message me with any questions.
