Friedrich Deusch, the German inventor whose name is now most associated with silver coating, patented the process in 1895 and showed his work at an exhibition in Bordeaux in 1907.

Deusch returned to Schwäbisch Gmünd in southern Germany, where he founded his company Deusch & Co. in 1912. Deusch continued to exhibit his goods and won the gold medal at the 1913 World Exhibition in Ghent, Belgium.

With its presence, Schwäbisch Gmünd became the center of German silver circulation production. Schwäbisch Gmünd (about 20,000 inhabitants at this time) has had a long top tradition in the art of artists who work with gold and silver since the 16th century. Early on, there was a school of applied arts there, which became the school of the precious metals industry in 1907. In the 1920s, almost 190 companies were active in the precious metals industry. [13] The presence of materials, craftsmen and suppliers on site created an ideal environment for the industry.

The special feature of the new silver coating is the degree of purity - 925 for sterling silver or 999 for fine silver. The quality of the silver used for German overlays can be seen in the embossed 1000 mark (usually on the base or side of an item). The purity and thickness of the silver coating ensures that the beauty of the item is preserved even after many years of cleaning without loss to the silver. Although other types of silver, such as nickel silver, are eligible for silver overlay, the effect is not as vivid.
